"As we walk around the inner circle we can again use our allies to help us embrace the teachings. Remember that we are given the help we need, if we ask in a respectful way.
As we travel the inner wheel, we carry the basic energies or teachings of the direction from which we entered. In this case we have entered from the South so we work in the centre wheel with the teachings of song, dance and story telling.
Father Sky
Our first lesson on the inner circle lies with Father sky. Many of us feel disconnected with the sky because we do not understand the energies we receive from above. We can draw closer to these teachings by using a bright blue geode, eating sunflower seeds, wearing or using sky blue and calling on the power of brother lizard who carries sky dream medicine.
Our brother lizard is the keeper of sky dreams and therefore the totem ally for the energy of Father Sky. It is said that during sleep our brother whispers stories into our ears and tells us of our future. Lizard medicine brings us our dreams and through them we create our joys and our fears. Our brother also helps us look at the dark side of these dreams and fears with courage and wisdom.
Grandmother Moon
Grandmother Moon strongly influences water spirits; each time we drink water we can feel grandmother draw closer. Her stone person is the moonstone, the herb sister is mugwort who helps us dream; the beautiful north American Loon with its mournful call is the totem ally and the colour is silvery white.
For many North American tribal groups the loon has a similar energy to the owl because it also sees death and calls us to remember our own mortality. While the owl is often the caller of death, sister loon shows us rebirth or the transience of each incarnation. The loon is a water bird and can sink beneath the waters in order to fish. She is a magical creature who can suddenly appear at the edge of the water and then dive so deeply that she may seem to disappear. Just as you think she will never rise to the surface again, she pops up where you least expect. She shows us that cycle of death and rebirth are part of life. This is her medicine for you.
Turtle Clan Stone
The turtle is the earthly aspect of Mother Earth. She is the all-round nourisher and provider of all that lies below our feet. As we walk around the inner circle we draw closer to the clans. To connect more fully to the turtle clan use petrified wood in your medicine bag, place your plant sister mint in your tea, and meditate with the sacred power colour, dark green to brown.
The old people have many stories about the turtle and how what we call North America, became Great Turtle Island to the first peoples. The Blackfoot story of creation tells how the Great Turtle felt sorry for people because they had no dry place to live.
